Selecting a Recovery Tow Strap

When selecting a tow strap, it's important to consider the weight of the recovery vehicle, not the immobilized vehicle, as the key factor in determining the minimum required strength. The bare minimum for a tow strap's Minimum Breaking Strength (MBS) should be twice the weight of the recovery vehicle. Keep in mind that the ideal length for a tow strap depends on several variables, including terrain, environmental conditions, and the specific recovery scenario.

In tight spaces or confined areas, a shorter tow strap of around 20 feet is often more effective. This length provides better control and reduces the risk of the strap getting caught or tangled. However, in off-road environments, such as forests or remote locations where positioning a recovery vehicle close to the stuck vehicle is challenging, a longer 30-foot tow strap offers more flexibility and increases the chances of a successful recovery.

For maximum preparedness, it's recommended to have both 20-foot and 30-foot tow straps available. This ensures you can handle various recovery situations and be ready to assist others when needed.

How to Properly Use a Recovery Tow Strap

Attaching a recovery tow strap correctly is essential for safe and effective recovery operations. Heavy Duty Synthetic Shackles provide a secure and convenient method for connecting and disconnecting recovery straps to the vehicle. These shackles are an excellent option because they are lightweight, durable, and easy to handle.

However, it's crucial to remember that both the working load limit (WLL) of the shackle and the recovery tow strap must be considered when using them together. The WLL for the entire assembly is determined by the lower of the two values. Always ensure that the combined WLL of the recovery system — including the strap and the shackle — is within safe operating limits.

When using soft shackles, extra attention to safety is required. Unlike traditional metal shackles, soft shackles can be more flexible, but they should still be handled with care. Always inspect the soft shackle for any signs of wear, fraying, or damage before use, as these can compromise its strength. Ensure the soft shackle is properly threaded and tightened around the vehicle’s recovery points to prevent accidental disengagement during use.

Tow Strap | Recovery Strap Maintenance

To ensure your tow straps perform at their best over the long term, proper maintenance is essential. These durable straps are designed to handle tough tasks, but taking care of them can extend their lifespan and maintain their effectiveness.

  • Always keep your straps clear of sharp surfaces that could cause damage or wear.
  • Keep your straps stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Prolonged UV exposure can weaken the webbing over time.
  • Ensure that your towing straps are not exposed to temperatures above 200°F to prevent heat damage.
  • For routine cleaning, simply spray the strap with water along the length of the webbing. There’s no need for harsh chemicals; just water is enough to keep it clean.
  • Never exceed the rated capacity of your tow straps or recovery straps. Doing so can compromise the safety and effectiveness of the equipment.
