Do you know how long you can use your existing recovery tow straps? Or is there an expiration on synthetic materials? Do they weaken over time? All of these are valid questions, and we’ll go through each one for you.
Tow Straps Lifespan - How long can I use my straps?
As long as it's safe to do so! If you maintain and store your straps correctly, only use them the way they are designed to be used, and stay within the safe range of capacities, your straps can last you a few years. However, as with any synthetic material, they can of course weaken over time. If you use your strap once or twice per month, it will likely last longer than if you are using it 3-4 times per day!
Do they Expire?
No, there is no expiration but again, it comes down to how well you look after them. If you have kept them outside over the summer, they've been battered with excessive heat, been covered in dust, dirt, and grime, will they be in the same condition they would be if they were in a bag in your trunk or garage? No of course not!
We don't want to keep repeating the same point over and over again here, but all of these questions have the same answer! Your tow straps lifespan will be longer the better you look after them. Regardless of material, size, weight, or usage, any synthetic strap will last much longer if it's used correctly, stored properly, and inspected regularly.
Can Tow Straps Be Repaired?
Yes and No! It is possible to repair synthetic tow straps, there are a variety of companies offering this service. However we strongly recommend against this. When a synthetic tow strap requires repairs, there is no way to tell if this has affected other parts of the strap, has it caused the internal fibers to loosen or stretch? Just because you cant see the damage doesnt mean its not there. If you see any signs of fraying, or other degradation, we recommend replacing your tow straps as soon as possible.
